Doldrum: Be your own hero
An introduction…
Doldrum design games and events that allow audiences to interact and play as well as to watch and listen.
Some of our work is made for people to experience on their own as individuals, some is intended for mass city wide audiences. Sometimes things can be competitive with people playing on their own or in teams. Sometimes they are an adventure.
Our work is made to take place in bars, cafes, on the streets, in parks, car parks and sometimes even in theatres. It is always made to happen in public places.
Where we come from
Doldrum started as a theatre company. Increasingly we became influenced by games and the idea of taking our audiences on journeys through the real world rather than asking them to sit in the dark in a theatre. Together with our audiences we found a thrill in being led into worlds that were familiar but somehow different, where the rules had changed. The gaming influence grew and the stories we told owed more to computer games in their style than to TV, film, theatre or literature.
We were brought up playing games, in playgrounds and on street corners as well as on computers and consoles. With joysticks in our hands we got used to being in control of the story, telling the characters where to go and what to do. Away from the computer we used to have adventures. We used to be spacemen, princesses and cowboys and we didn’t need to dress up or spend lots of money. We made the world around us exciting, even when it wasn’t.
